#note Forced to keep the Q here - or am I? A sim surprises me by suggesting that exchanging is slightly better. In this case I can keep a strong enough leave (ERT) to compensate for the 22 point sacrifice, which may not be the case in a situation where the leave I would be hanging onto is less good. I did briefly consider exchanging but thought 22 points would be too much to give up.
>Oscar_Freire: CEEP 7F CEPE +27 27
>Arie_Sinke: DKQRRTU H7 ..RK +10 32
#note This wins a sim. It's not inspiring but scoring a few cheap points is now better than exchaging because A) I have a U to go with the Q and B) I no longer have an E to make the leave after exchanging more valuable.
>Oscar_Freire: ILNORSY 11E LINY +28 55
>Arie_Sinke: DIQRSTU 6I SQUID +45 77
#note This wins a sim over 12C QUID, which hangs onto the S and even kind of sets it up in the event that Oscar doesn't get to the spot first. The 12 extra points are just too good I guess.
>Oscar_Freire: ?EEHRRT M1 THREa.ER +74 129
>Arie_Sinke: ADJMNRT F9 DJ.N +28 105
#note This is meh but fine.
>Oscar_Freire: ?AABINO L8 OuABAIN +71 200
>Arie_Sinke: AEFMPRT K10 FAM +33 138
#note This wins a sim by a huge margin over the higher scoring but excessively aggressive FATHER 2J.
>Oscar_Freire: AAGIU 12B IGUA.A +18 218
>Arie_Sinke: EOPRTTW 1J POW.ER +45 183
#note This is fine. Leave is weak but I need the points.
>Oscar_Freire: AEOZ 14J ZO.AE +68 286
>Arie_Sinke: AAEFITT 15G FETA +32 215
#note Flat out miss of TAFIA 15F for three extra points, which is an unequivocally better play and a very disappointing miss.
>Oscar_Freire: EGOU O1 .OUGE +8 294
>Arie_Sinke: AHILNST C6 LATHIN.S +84 299
#note Only bingo. Held but released (unfortunately, I really wanted a challenge).
>Oscar_Freire: EGI 8A GI.E +18 312
>Arie_Sinke: BDEOOSV L1 .OOD +29 328
#note This is better than any alternative play solely on the basis of score.
>Oscar_Freire: ADN M10 DAN +21 333
>Arie_Sinke: BEORSVY 13F SYBO +37 365
#note This play is not a monumental error, but it is an error and it turns out that not making an error on this play would likely have saved me the game. I have an alternative that looks slightly better on all counts - BROSY N8 scores 42. I'm not accustomed to finding these weird new words - and even less accustomed to spotting four way overlaps like that. BROSY isn't massively better than SYBO because apparently the R I hang onto after SYBO does help the leave a bit - but it would have avoided the catastrophic sequence that followed. ORBY 8L for 27 is a simple alternative that hangs onto the S that I looked into that may or may not be better than my play.
>Oscar_Freire: C 8L ..C +5 338
>Arie_Sinke: EINRRTV D3 VENIR. +22 387
#note Oscar's play of ORC was a very creative way to inject some positive volatility into the game! I didn't ask him what he kept but it was probably something good like EILMOS. I now have to decide where or not to attempt to block. I looked into a few blocks (FADE, FADER) but wasn't impressed with any of them. FADER often allows SEROW and FADE keeps such an atrocious leave that Oscar can just outrun me without bothering with the ORCS spot (or play something like ISM). I did not spot what is likely my best block - RABAT 11J for 7. Unfortunately it allows RABATO. The good news is that I was right to eschew blocking and that all the blocks are worse than my play. The bad news is that I still made the wrong play. VERITE wins the sim over VENIRE. I am not sure exactly why this is the case but apparently the N goes out better than the T here. If I had played VERITE, Oscar could still win, but not by playing SWIM - he would have had to play an out in two sequence involving SWILE/MO or something like that. SWIM would allow UNVEIL.
>Oscar_Freire: EILMOSW O8 SWIM +45 383
#note This play does the job.
>Arie_Sinke: ILRTUV 4A VIL.R +12 399
#note This play technically isn't optimal (RIVULET G2 loses by one with optimal play by both sides) but I wanted to give myself a chance by hoping Oscar would miss his only winning play of LEVO with a minute on his clock. He didn't miss it.
