>matt: ALLRSTU H7 LUSTRAL +66 66
#note This is the championship game; winner-take-all/loser-take-second with no spread considerations at all
I'm flying too close to the sun; I did not expect to be competing for anything after starting 5-4 at this one but here we are!
Get ready to see my subconscience try as hard as possible to choke this tournament away
I have NO IDEA where I pulled this word from; I've never studied this deep. Darin held and released but I was pretty confident on it. It's good.
>darin: EHI I9 HIE +23 23
>matt: AEELLSU J7 LEAL +17 83
#note Paranoid or brilliant?
Saw the 2x2 LAURELS for 28 and the equity play of LEU J10, but I feel like this is so so good for long-term win% because of how it mucks up the left side of the board
But if I just play LEU and bingo next turn, it's also close to GG
Major sacrifice but I think I'd do it again
>darin: DEOPT K9 DEPOT +28 51
>matt: CEORSUW L10 ROW +31 114
#note SEROW is a 5 that I did not know, but that's an awesome option here. ROW vs OW is a stylistic decision but SEROW is the standout if I know it
>darin: EHN M11 HEN +26 77
>matt: CEORSUW 13G C.OU. +11 125

#note What a find from Darin! Just like that, my "iron wall" has come crumbling down and my odds of winning this tournament have dropped <50%
>matt: CEOOPTY 1D COP.Y +45 240
>darin: NRTZ M2 N.RTZ +14 258
>matt: AEIORST C2 SA.TOIRE +70 310
#note another huge swing -- his post-bingo draw was abysmal and I draw into SATIRE. could I hang on and win this thing?
>darin: MMOOTT D9 MOTMOT +24 282
#note and then Darin plays a word I have never seen before. Thankfully the esses and glanks had been played or else my brain would have exploded here
held and released
>matt: ABIINOW C12 OBIA +26 336
>darin: KNUY E4 .UNKY +30 312
>matt: ADEIJNW 6B J.I. +27 363
#note The unseen pool is bad. Really, really bad.. And I won't be able to exchange this game. I opted to play just two tiles over JA(D)E and played an I because I anticipated several more coming. But JA(D)E scores so well that even QVG draws won't sink me, I don't think? No idea what to do here
>darin: AIV 5K VI.A +14 326
>matt: ADDEENW O2 DAWENED +106 469
>matt: ADDEENW -- -106 363
#note I feel like it's impossible for me to lose this game now, but I'm going to try my hardest
I was like 95% sure that this WAS valid. Thought DAWEN was an alternate spelling of DAVEN so DAVENED/DAVENING being good means that DAWEN/DAWENING must also be good
But DAWEN is actually the past tense of DAW
Shortly after Darin challenged, I remembered that ADEGINNW is an alphagram I always messed up (AWNINGED, not DAWENING*) and the blood drains from my face as I realize I may have just blown this thing
of course, it adjudicates red
and I feel sick to my stomach
>darin: A 6M .A +17 343
#note Darin makes a great play here to block my biggest plays
>matt: ADDEENW 14B D.. +8 371
#note I'm pretty sure this is zugzwang and I'm supposed to pass here, but I was so scared of straight up losing if I pass and he plays QI/IS
I counted through and realized that this would win even if I draw the Q immediately, so I just did it
Gonna ask Cesar to Macondo this and see if we've truly encountered 2-in-the-bag zugzwang
>darin: R 12B R.. +5 348
>matt: ADEENQW N1 WED +29 400
#note My heart sinks as I do indeed draw the Q on my one-tile fish
I did all of this math last turn and confirmed that I'd outrun his GIB -> whatever sequence
I double check my math three times and then begin operation eat-the-Q-but-don't-lose
What a bizarro endgame position. I bet it makes a lot of good puzzles with a small score adjustment
>darin: BGGGIIV O6 GIG +28 376

>darin: BGIV 13C ..B +7 383
>matt: ANQ 7C .N. +9 424
>darin: GIV 12A G... +9 392
#note I am like 99.5% sure this is invalid
>matt: AQ 2G .A +8 432
#note I am like 99.9% sure GROM* is invalid, but I will lose by 2 if I challenge and he goes out with VI(S) so I begrudgingly accept and then miss my best option of (F)A(IN)
>darin: IV 2A VI. +12 404
#note and there you go, folks
bagging a player who played 7x better than me, nearly blowing the tournament about 5 turns in a row, but somehow hanging on despite myself
sorry Darin
hooray me
