#player2 Kenji_Matsumoto Kenji Matsumoto
>Mike_Frentz: BHIILOS 8F OBI +10 10
#note 2024 Word Cup, Round 7. Included only for the sake of completeness.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: AEINPRT 7E INAPTER +72 72
#note I...just plain forgot that this got takein out of the word list. But wait! It gets worse!
>Mike_Frentz: CHILPSS J2 CHIPL.SS +73 83
#note Where the heck did THIS come from? Maybe I had CHIPLET in my brain from a couple of games ago. Held and released.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: ACJOOOT 4G COT.JA +32 104
#note This sequence is not really that surprising and why I didn't play Nationals. I've done plenty of losing at Nationals when I was good at the game, and I strongly suspected that I'd have sequences like this that might creep in from time to time. Disastrous and embarrassing.
>Mike_Frentz: ?AEIKOU 5I A.O +30 113
#note Or AJI or POI. I like this leave better with the open C, though.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: MNOOQVY 2J .ONVOY +28 132
>Mike_Frentz: ??EIKLU - +0 113
#note Remember how I said this game goes off the rails? I played sULKIEr M4, which is the right play...in NWL. Unfortunately, this is a slighly different lexicon, one in which COTIJA doesn't take the S. Even Kenji admitted this was kinda BS as he challenged. (That said, all of my playable bingos open a triple, so...)
>Kenji_Matsumoto: ABDMORS -5 +0 132
>Mike_Frentz: ??EIKLU O1 K.E +30 143
#note ...this may be best anyway.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: AEEIINR 9G ANI.E +18 150
>Mike_Frentz: ??IILUU -IILUU +0 143
#note Maybe it's worth keeping an L here, but the comedy of trading five keeeping two blanks was too much to pass up.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: ADEEIOR M1 O.A +12 162
#note The double blank leave makes this hard. Not sure here.
>Mike_Frentz: ??BDRST L9 STRoBeD +76 219
#note BeDReST 10B is what I was looking for to not open the triple.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: DEEEILR M12 DELE +24 186
#note Sim likes ELIDED. Maybe a small mistake but I don't think the difference is huge.
>Mike_Frentz: AEFORUY 15L ..FY +33 252
#note Maybe REDEFY instead, though I'd rather keep things tight.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: EGIMNOR K12 MO +14 200
#note Definitely open to suggestions here. Probably just MOG now if I had to do it again and going all in on the S. Again small mistake probably
>Mike_Frentz: AEMORTU 6E MO +15 267
#note Again, the sim wants me to play off more tiles (MATURER/ROUTER or the like at 11F), but what tiles am I actually trying to draw?
>Kenji_Matsumoto: EEGINRV 11H GIVE. +28 228
>Mike_Frentz: AEINRTU N6 RUINATE +67 334
>Kenji_Matsumoto: EEENRSZ H1 ZER. +39 267
>Mike_Frentz: EGILNTU O8 TUG +23 357
#note At this point, the way I lose is something like FAX here.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: ADEEHNS 5D HA +20 287
#note Tough between this and GHESS. Really not sure, but okay with this decision.
>Mike_Frentz: EGILLNU 2D GUIL. +8 365
#note "At some point you have to stop trying to bingo and start trying to win the game." --Lester Schonbrun
>Kenji_Matsumoto: DEEFNRS 4A DEFER +38 325
#note Kenji took several minutes over this move, as the room was getting louder with other games finishing. "I'd have played five minutes ago if you were a 1700 player," he finally said. There are definitely scenarios after this that win for him (RELAX 1A or the like, or pulling off a Q-stick), while taking the bingo with FENDERS will generally simplify my life. (Kenji's note: I had maybe 40 seconds after this play was over and really analyzed it after the fact. This is just terrible. My thought process is that if the bingos get there I probably win, but the problem is that both that I don't get there enough and that a lot of times I don't even win anyway. The better route to winning here is just bingoing and hoping I hit big X plays (1a or through the F I created) which Mike really can't do a lot about. It's a lot easier to hit 5 tiles out of a bag rather than 7. It's true that most of the time Mike is just up by 45 or something after FENDERS and I never bingo, but there are enough X outs that I actually do get there enough: a lot more than I get there this way.
>Mike_Frentz: EEILNQT 12G QI +16 381
#note If he got there, he got there. Let's deal with this first.
>Kenji_Matsumoto: DINSWWX 7M X. +17 342
#note Should just play WIND. There's no hope here.
>Mike_Frentz: AAEELNT A1 LEA.EN +21 402
>Kenji_Matsumoto: DINSUWW 13F WIND +27 369
#note After the tournament Mike said some nice things about how I'm actually good at Scrabble, and while I appreciate it, he has plenty of evidence to quite the contrary. Easily the worst played game of this tournament, and it's probably been several decades since I've played this badly at a game in a major.
>Mike_Frentz: ART C4 .ART +14 416
#note Hey, sometimes you win ugly. They all count. (Minus 10 from Kenji on time; final score 428-359.)
