#note This was game 3 out of 3 from my appearance on the Try Guys YouTube channel, as part of their "4 vs 1" series, released in February 2024. In this game, my handicap was to give the Try Guys a 300 point headstart and play the entire game blindfolded. Lindsay sat next to me verbally telling me what my letters are and what has been played on the board. I'm adding this to XT for posterity about 2 months after the recording - unfortunately, I don't remember my racks. The Try Guys team consisted of Zach Kornfeld, Jonny Manganello, Kwesi James and Ash Perez. You can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/r7a4GCB4R6g?si=nQL42G4_UVPFVLjG
>Try_Guys: DOPRRTY F7 P.TY +17 17
#note The Try Guys full rack here (shown in the video). Was spotted that they had TRY on their rack, and also TRYPOD*, which is the name of their podcast.
>Austin_Shin: EHIRTTY 9B HEY +19 53
#note Being blindfolded and 300 points down to start, decided to set up the T-HEY hook as a bingo lane since I'm two Ts and a T was just played. Not a great leave, but hey ho. Important to keep the board open and easier to remember.
>Try_Guys: DENORRT A4 RODENT +34 51
#note Their full rack again, and they came up with a very strong play, with one of the three unseen Ts. Score now 53 - 351.
>Austin_Shin: AILNRTT H1 RATTLIN. +77 130
#note Found my highest scoring bingo here for 77 points, despite many viewers online disputing the validity of RATTLINE, which is just a variant spelling of RATLINE. Score now 130 - 351. Still a long ways to catch up, but was nice to get in an early bingo.
>Try_Guys: DFMNNOR I8 DOM +21 72
#note Again, pretty strong play from the Try Guys here. In terms of everyday words, this ranks up there, (I)NFORM 6H would be best on that front.
>Austin_Shin: ABELPSU 2G P.USABLE +78 208
#note So, this is my one and only phony during all three games, and it happens in a position where no bingo was available. I did even mention to Lindsay, "is PAUSABLE a word?". But I was thinking of many other words here like CAUSABLE, PASSABLE, maybe even PLAUSIBLE! But with scores, at 130 - 372, I felt like I needed to push the boat out a little in order to catch up, and honestly, wasn't sure it would ever get challenged. Though of course, I wanted to play honestly and didn't want to rely on non-challenged phonies during this series at all.
>Try_Guys: EFNR J9 FERN +20 92
#note Scores now at 208 - 392.
>Austin_Shin: EFIV B1 FIVE +22 230
#note
Partial rack - though admittedly at this stage, with lots of long words on the board and ongoing distractions from the Try Guys, my visualization of the board was not at its best!
>Try_Guys: ?AAEJLN 12H JA.E +19 111
#note Again, a pretty solid play from the Try Guys, although setting up a huge S hook onto JANE. Full rack here shown in the video.
>Austin_Shin: DISU L12 SUID +38 268
#note Luckily, the play of JANE plays into my hands as I score well and open the board further. Score now at 268 - 444.
>Try_Guys: ?AELNOO H12 .ANE +33 144
#note Playing the same word on consecutive moves, but this time, for many more points!
>Austin_Shin: AMW 15L .WAM +30 298
#note Halfway through the game and about half of the 300 point deficit has been overcome. Score: 298 - 444.
>Try_Guys: ?LOO 1A O. +15 159
#note Some respite for me here as a solitary tile was played.
>Austin_Shin: ABCEIRT N8 BACTERI. +86 384
#note In the video, I mentioned that I "had multiple bingos" available, much to the surprise of the Try Guys. My choice was between BACTERI(A) N8 and BACTERI(N) 14A. It was only until about 30 seconds later, I realized that the former triples the C and is 8 points more. So, easy decision here. The scores move to 384 - 459 with plenty left of the game to go.
>Try_Guys: ?ELX O6 aXEL +44 203
#note The Try Guys come up with a high scoring play, despite burning the blank. Keeps them out of harm's way on the scoreboard at least as the score is now 384 - 503. I would need a little luck to come back from this, though my visualization of the board was fading a little bit by this point!
>Austin_Shin: AWZ N4 WAZ +65 449
#note Phew! Easy decision and on a part of the board that I was sure about! 449 - 503. Getting close.
>Try_Guys: OO O3 OO +9 212
#note 9 points? Won't complain about that!
>Austin_Shin: ?GIOORS 14B SpOORI.G +70 519
#note As I couldn't fully visualize how many spaces were available in rows 4 and 5 through the T and L, I was relieved to get this bingo down as I wasn't sure if this was the only bingo lane left on the board. This move now puts me into an unlikely 519 - 512 lead with 7 tiles in the bag.
>Try_Guys: CEI 5H .ICE +12 224
#note Already unsure how much space is available through rows 4 and 5, I'm now even MORE unsure of what can be played as (L)ICE is on the board. Due to Zach now recalling specifically to me the Trolls franchise for a full a minute, which was in the video, I'm now steering clear of that area of the board entirely as we enter the end of the game.
>Austin_Shin: AADGLNR 1M AND +16 535
#note Not my finest move - and with the scores at 519 - 524, this was definitely a move where I'd like to take the blindfold off and find the real best move. 4 tiles in the bag and with board visualization heavily dwindling, I was really only sure of moves that could be played around the edge of the board. This was why I played AND, though moves like (KY)ANG D8 (26 pts) were significantly better.
>Try_Guys: IQU C11 QUI. +24 248
#note The Try guys retake the lead with a nice score whilst dumping the Q. Leaves one in the bag and makes the triple on A15 a little tricky to access. Also note that during the game, Lindsay was not tile tracking, so I had no idea what tiles were left unseen.
>Austin_Shin: AGGLRTU 3B .UGG +18 553
#note Onto the final racks and there's seemingly no way to win, unless
i can make them blunder. But again, I don't know what tiles are left so end up just trying to squeeze out whatever decent scores I can muster up, starting with (V)UGG for 18, and kind of abandoned the idea of an out in two. Score 553 - 548.
>Try_Guys: EHIOS 15A HIS +33 281
#note Another strong play, and what turns out to be the game defining play. They had an S and with a little help from Lindsay, asking if SI was a word, they play HIS for 33 points. At this point I already knew I'd lost unless they randomly couldn't play whatever tiles they had left.
>Austin_Shin: ALRT 11C .AT +24 577
#note My best and highest scoring move in this situation, and was merely hoping to put some scoreboard pressure on the Try Guys for their next turn. Score: 577 - 581.
>Try_Guys: EO 3L OE +14 295
#note The Try Guys found the third highest scoring outplay to finish the game! Final score: 577 - 599, a loss of 22 points, despite being blindfolded and giving them a 300 point headstart. In the grand scheme of things, this was the second time that I had ever done this. I made it close and scored 577 points... so I'll take that result! Hope you enjoyed the YouTube video and the series of 3 games!
