#player1 Jay_Levin Jay Levin
#player2 Samuel_Kaplan Samuel Kaplan
>Jay_Levin: EKRT 8F TREK +16 16
#note Made it to PA safely after spending the previous night at Marty Fialkow's house in Moorestown, NJ. I want to thank him very much for having me over! And TREK is a fitting word to start because I did have a longer drive than a fair number of the players in this tournament.
>Samuel_Kaplan: NNOSTUZ H7 Z.N +12 12
#note I will say that I had a hard time with this position. I am well aware that Jay tends to play tighter boards which is why I did look at plays like 7H NOUN, H5 ZONE, and I5 ZON(K). The problem is all of those plays give back a fair amount. Sure, I could draw into TIZ/ZIT after NOUN. I wasn't too keen on ZONE because I wasn't even close to the extension of EUROZONE. I liked how Jay would be likely to leave my S hook for TREKS alone if he didn't have an A or an S himself. Having said the above, this play appears to be the most sound while creating a board most favorable to my leave.
>Jay_Levin: AD I6 DA. +21 37
#note And that partially obstructs my plan.
>Samuel_Kaplan: DINOSTU J3 DINOS +25 37
#note I had the right idea if I wanted to go here, but it should be UDOS in this spot with the K on the board already. But even better is setting up another S hook with H5 DO(ZEN)! #visionlarge
>Jay_Levin: OTW K4 TOW +25 62
>Samuel_Kaplan: CPQRTUX -CPQRTU +0 37
#note I decided to exchange because if Jay doesn't have an S for Column L plays or any hooks to DOW, or a Row 3 bingo ending with the D, I can't see him scoring much. So I wasn't willing to do 4H QU(IT) keeping a leave that's not getting me anywhere on this board with no open vowels, and not to mention there's still so many Es left. If Jay hits Column L making QUITE, I'm just screwing myself for several turns. So I kept the X to guarantee myself to score somehow as I decided to take a more patient approach and wait for him to open up.
>Jay_Levin: GILU F4 GUIL. +8 70
>Samuel_Kaplan: ?NORTUX 4C TRU. +10 47
#note Somewhat consistent with last turn, taking a more patient approach while he appears to be fighting bad racks and hoping to score more with the X next turn. 5D RO(U)X just lets him score on top easily. And I have an N for the DOWN hook to get the right side going later on.
>Jay_Levin: DMP E3 D.MP +30 100
#note That didn't work out too well with what I drew next. But at least I created a distraction.
>Samuel_Kaplan: ?HNOQSX L6 SOX +26 73
#note This is so bad that I actually considered burning the blank with 4H Qu(IT)S for only 20 more. But at least now I can slowly start to open the right side of the board while he continues fighting through clunk, and I can still draw QAT on Column C with 8 As left.
>Jay_Levin: APSW L1 WAPS +32 132
>Samuel_Kaplan: ?ABHINQ M7 NIQAB +39 112
#note This play is a homerun, or should I say, HOMERUN*. It forks nicely and sets up my H for another huge score.
>Jay_Levin: LNR 2K L.RN +8 140
>Samuel_Kaplan: ?AEEHOV N10 HEVEA +55 167
#note Thumbs up to this play too! And HEVEA over HEAVE because this takes way fewer hooks and it doesn't allow Jay to have as many easy responses on Column O with there not being a vowel next to the O12 spot. This decision would prove critical to the outcome of this game.
>Jay_Levin: EIJLORT 13I JOLTI.R +44 184
#note This is his full rack for this position. JOLTIER would have actually played at O6 for 109 and 15H for 107!
>Samuel_Kaplan: ?ACINOS 15H AlNICOS +95 262
#note This or 15H bONACIS both score the most, and this play got challenged.
>Jay_Levin: CDEFGUY - +0 184
#note Not actual rack. HEVEAS and AlNICOS got challenged.
>Samuel_Kaplan: CEFGILT O8 FLIT +32 294
#note Column O is no more.
>Jay_Levin: AEUV K9 UVEA. +16 200
>Samuel_Kaplan: CEFGRTY 14F CRY +19 313
#note Well now it appears that Jay is in vowel trouble and could have picked more so I don't think there's a huge difference between this and N4 FYCE with the score, but at least I now make the bottom part of the board harder to bingo on.
>Jay_Levin: EU C3 U.E +6 206
>Samuel_Kaplan: EEFGIOT 1N EF +17 330
#note Should be M1 O(R)E regardless of how many vowels he might still have. #findingmedium
>Jay_Levin: EI G8 .EI +7 213
>Samuel_Kaplan: AEGHIOT F10 HOE +27 357
#note I'll give him an E to bingo through if he's keeping more vowels, so this over HOG or HO.
>Jay_Levin: MO N6 MO +13 226
>Samuel_Kaplan: ?AAGIRT E11 GAT +16 373
#note Despite me being low on time, I wouldn't sugarcoat this one- this is my 1st missed bingo out of too many this tournament. RAGTAIl plays at B5. But since plays on Column E actually sim better, so this proved to be rather inconsequential. And it's going to be easy to redraw bingoes in 2 spots with all those Es still lurking.
>Jay_Levin: E 3L .E +12 238
#note I wonder how many Es he had at one point?
>Samuel_Kaplan: ?ABEEIR B5 BEAmIER +66 439
#note Was under 30 seconds, so I pretty much had to slap this down. Postmortem, I realized this played at D9. So this time, the miss actually hurt me. Not good board vision here.
>Jay_Levin: ADEGINO A1 DINGO +32 270
#note His best play by far.
>Samuel_Kaplan: Y 12J Y. +10 449
#note Best out play. Sometimes, more unconventional methods work on closed boards. NIQAB was the move that got the wheels moving, and this game would have been much closer if I did HEAVE instead of HEVEA, so I'm glad I made that good call. 1-0 +183.
