#note Whangarei Round 2
>Chris_Tallman: AEORRSZ 8H ARROZ +48 48
#note I thought I'd seen that ARROZ was an adjective when reviewing the power tiles 5's. Apparently, since there isn't any Mexican food in NZ (inside joke), I had no chance of knowing that it's red Mexican rice and therefore a noun. Oops :(
>Anderina_McLean: FI J8 .IF +14 14
>Chris_Tallman: EGRSTTV K7 V.TER +23 71
#note I considered VEG/RIFE for defense as RIF indicates a strong rack, but the lines off of the A in ARROZ would still be open. RSTT is a better bingo leave than GST, but a bit of a risk of getting no vowels. VOTER blocks Z plays too, which Anderina could have with racks that don't bingo - it makes her next play score much less if she doesn't hit one, and so I decided on it.
>Anderina_McLean: AEIORSV 9B OVARIES +67 81
#note I didn't see that she had SAVORIER/RIFE for 79 either.
>Chris_Tallman: ?DDGMST -DDGM +0 71
#note Was wishing I'd played VEG now. Quackle likes DIG for 9, but I wanted to keep the floaters in OVARIES open and get a more sure bingo next turn with my exchange. I suppose DIG or GID block overlaps of the ARI in OVARIES which are pretty likely plays for Anderina next turn, but I'd make the exchange again.
>Anderina_McLean: AEIOPST E4 SEPTO.IA +90 171
#note Well, I'm getting punished for chickening out of ARROZES - not looking good now...
>Chris_Tallman: ??AEIST A9 cAnIEST +78 149
#note Mixed feelings drawing the second blank now. CRISTAE was likely the best bingo to avoid creating the hotspot below the O of OVARIES. I wanted to play down to open bingo lines at the bottom of the board for sure rather than something ending in C.
>Anderina_McLean: WX B8 W.X +54 225
#note Immediately punished. Anything that wasn't the X would have scored well around the R in SEPTORIA anyway, but...
>Chris_Tallman: EEFNSTY F8 N.FTY +36 185
#note I considered FEY in the top left which keeps ENST, but I wanted to block the scoring spots around where I played NIFTY, since 30-40 point plays there would keep Anderina ahead even if I bingo. It is a big hit to my bingo chances though and Quackle doesn't like it much.
>Anderina_McLean: EELR C7 RE.EL +24 249
>Chris_Tallman: CDEEEGS L10 GED +19 204
#note Played this over GEED to create the GEDS hook. Also, another stacking play to the right of GED will open the right side of the board.
>Anderina_McLean: AKOP 4A KOAP. +32 281
>Anderina_McLean: NW (challenge) +5 286
#note I did look at all the Collins 4's pre-tournament, but this didn't look 100% familiar, so I gave it the nickel. I also had a bad rack, so the benefit was higher for me if I won the challenge.
>Chris_Tallman: ACEEOQS B2 CO.EE +18 222
#note All 4 U's left, so keeping the Q isn't as bad as normal. COOEE also blocks the triple scoring spot with the K, and scoring in general is tough on this board, which I need to keep that way to stay in bingo range. Definitely like this over exchanging.
>Anderina_McLean: NW C3 W.N +24 310
>Chris_Tallman: AJMNQST G11 TAJ +26 248
#note One of my favourite moves of the tourney. I felt like playing QATS/GEDS for 29 would lose the game as it'd spend my case S, and allow Anderina to block the lines at the bottom and cruise to a win, and exchanging would leave me too far behind to catch up even if I bingo. There are 3 A's and 3 O's out, so she's probably 50-60% to have one, but I decided to gamble that she didn't, or in a medium case she scores 30 there and puts a floater down there for me to hit. I'm also hoping to draw a U for my Q still with 4 out.
>Anderina_McLean: EIL B13 LIE +14 324
#note She wasn't happy after TAJ so I knew my gamble had paid off. She said after the game that she didn't have any good way of obstructing the YA- spot and so decided to block thte bottom left instead.
>Chris_Tallman: AHMNOQS H12 HOMA +61 309
#note And a really lucky draw for me gets me back into the game :)
>Anderina_McLean: DE C7 .....ED +30 354
>Chris_Tallman: INOQSTY I13 YON +33 342
#note I don't need to worry as much about closing the bottom as I can always open the right side with the case S if needed.
>Anderina_McLean: IIUUU -IIUUU +0 354
#note Felt like Anderina had to be exchanging U's here, which I was happy about sitting on the Q.
>Chris_Tallman: HILNQST M11 HILT +23 365
#note Sets up the S with REHS and HILTS with a SUQ draw. Felt like it'd be hard to lose after this, despite the sim only giving me 58% winning chances.
