#player2 Mack_M Mack M
>Carl: AIOTVXY 8G VOX +26 26
#note This seemed automatic, but IVY 8G, setting up the X, marginally wins the sim. (-.5)
>Mack_M: AEEGNOP 7H PEONAGE +77 77
>Carl: AEINRTY K5 TA.NERY +40 66
#note This was a very unorthodox move, and it's hard to say whether the sim is correct here. TANNERY doesn't sim that far back-- it's -7.5. But it's probably better than it looks. TEARY 6F wins the sim easily, but I also foresaw that Mack would often play at 8L, and then I'd be down 40+ points on a tight board. After TANNERY, however, the hotspot is closed and Mack will have a harder time controlling the board.
>Mack_M: IQ L4 QI +24 101
>Carl: EEEIORT M3 TIE +20 86
#note RETIE M1 sims a little better. (-2.4)
>Mack_M: DKNO N6 K.NDO +22 123
>Carl: AEEOORS O8 AERO +23 109
#note I played this pretty quickly, but there are better options. ERASE O4 scores 18 more points at the expense of the leave. The sim winner is actually GOO M7, setting up a big play for next turn. (-4)
>Mack_M: EEMZ M10 MEZE +35 158
>Carl: AEOOPSW J9 WOO +22 131
#note Clearing my rack while making it more likely that I'll hit a bingo ending in S.
>Mack_M: AFUV 13I FAUV. +15 173
#note Excellent block by Mack! He knew what I was up to.
>Carl: ABEGLPS 6H ALB. +37 168
>Mack_M: EIIMNT 12D INTIME +27 200
>Carl: ?EGIPRS E6 PERIGo.S +70 238
#note Sacrificing too many points by avoiding opening lanes is a leak in my game, but this time Quackle agrees that PoRGIES 11A is too risky, even for 9 more points. I couldn't decide between PERIGONS or IMPREGNS, but there are even better options: SuPERING and SPhERING. (-0.5)
>Mack_M: HIRW 8A WHIR. +36 236
>Carl: ?AAGRTT C3 ATTAG.Rl +72 310
#note This was one of my luckiest tournaments ever.
>Mack_M: DFIO D1 FIDO +31 267
>Carl: ACILNUU 1A CUI. +27 337
#note I had the itch, but my better angels told me that Mack wasn't about to let me get away with FUNICULA*, which Dave Wiegand famously tried against Kenji at Nationals one year. I didn't think of sim-winner CANFUL 1A, keeping the rancid IU. The bag is full of consonants, Ls especially, and CANFUL also takes out bingos on Row 2. (-5)
>Mack_M: D J13 .D +7 274
>Carl: AELLNNU B10 ANNUL +17 354
#note Mack's last play is terrifying, and there's basically nothing I can do about it. I just had to hope he missed; if so, I'm nearly certain to draw a D, I (for ANNULI), O, or S to shut down Row 15.
>Mack_M: BCDEOSU N2 COS +24 298
#note This was a fascinating position. Mack determined that his chances after bingoing with SUBCODE were dicey at best. By delaying the bingo, Mack might be able to win more often if I empty the bag. But that may or may not be the case; maybe dicey-at-best is better than this.
>Carl: AEHJLLS 15F HAJES +49 403
#note Emptying the bag is totally wrong. I saw that HAJES didn't win every scenario, but I played it anyway. Mack recommended ILL 2D, setting up HAJES in two places. Quackle plays B5 AH, B6 HAH, 14M SH, or JEFE I11. (-20)
