>Carl: ADEGIIX 8G XI +18 18
#note Why I'm going to lose Nationals: First: IXIA is way better. (-5)
>Q: DDGKOOU 9F KUDO +24 24
>Carl: ADEGIIU 10D DUI +14 32
#note Wrong again. I have to exchange here, keeping ADE. (-2)
>Q: ADEEGOW D8 WE.GE +28 52
>Carl: ?AEEGIT E2 EGAlITE +69 101
#note I dithered between this and the C2 placement and got it wrong. Take the two points and move on. (-2)
>Q: ADIOQVY 13B QADI +40 92
>Carl: EFJLPRS 4D J.RL +22 123
#note I couldn't decide between this and JEFE 2B. I went with this because while JARL gives back an S hook, JEFE sets up a big O spot. I don't have an O but I do have the S. Quackle says JEFE is 2 points better overall, but it's irrelevant because I missed JAPER altogether, which wins the sim (-3)
>Q: EEHNOVY C5 ENVOY +34 126
>Carl: AEFOPST H1 FOPS +43 166
#note Relieved that Quackle didn't have an S, I plopped this down right away and was way off. FOR F2 keeps a much better leave. It's totally worth it to sacrifice some points to go for a bingo here. (-10)
>Q: EHIMSST J5 THEISMS +86 212
>Carl: AADEFRT F6 FA +28 194
#note Hey, I got this one right: the square peg fit in the square hole. A round of applaause.
>Q: EEGHMNO K2 GENOM +27 239
>Carl: ADEIRRT 14E TARRIED +64 258
#note I played this rather than TARDIER because it seemed harder to underlap. Wrong again. TARDIER sims best by one point, maybe because of AZ... plays at K14. (-1)
>Q: AEHPRRU 13I PRAHU +38 277
>Carl: BCCEINN 14A NIB +36 294
#note Here, I'm just barely on the right side of the sim. I didn't see BENNI 12K, but I can see why it might do well. It devalues column N and figures to lead to a better board position if Quackle can't use Column O or Row 15 next turn. So even though NIB wins the sim, I think BENNI might be a better play.
>Q: EEILORT 15J TOILER +28 305
>Carl: ACCENWZ L10 CAZ. +36 330
#note This took me a bit to spot, which is already a problem. These things need to be automatic if you want to win. And it's not even the best play, which is ANEW 12L, keeping CCZ. I had figured the W was pretty good on this board, and it is, but better to take out Column O. Earlier, I was struggling, but after ANEW, I'm better than even money to win this game.
>Q: ?ELORUY I6 OY +26 331
>Carl: ACENNSW N10 CANS +23 353
#note Aha, the moment of brilliancy. This is better than CAWS; it undoubles the N, and the W fits well on this board. CANS wins 5% more than any other play Quackle can come up with.
>Q: ?EELRUV B8 LEU +18 349
>Carl: BEINNOW L3 NOW +24 377
#note This is what separates the children from the adults. I saw that WINO gave back STARTLE, and immediately ruled it out and played this instead. The problem is that I have no real place to play the B now, and I've sacrificed enough points to where that's going to be a serious problem. After WINO, Quackle will bingo sometimes, but I'll be in better shape if it doesn't. Also, if I'm going to block bingos, why not WON instead, setting up NEB? These little mistakes add up, little by little. Sometimes, they decide the game.
>Q: ?AELRTV 2A TRAV.L +22 371
>Carl: ABEINOT 2J A.ENT +23 400
#note Best.
>Q: ?E 15A Es +20 391
#note Mistakes matter. Winning players don't make them. The mistakes I make are that I miss things, and even among the words I do find, I don't know which one to play, and I can't solve a pre-endgame even with infinite time, let alone whatever's left on my clock after fumbling through all the other bewildering decisions, and I smell like a wounded gazelle, which invigorates my opponents and repels women. All told, I'm going to lose big at Nationals just like I lose at life.
