#note Silicon Valley Classic
15 August, 2021
Round 17
With two games remaining, CS is in 2nd place at 10-5-1/+908, SK is in 3rd place at 10-6/+371.
Sim says this exchange is a mistake, preferring AMIGA, which I missed. I do think passing up WIG was just fine. If I could just have known opp's rack this would have been an easier turn.
>Chris_Schneider: EELNOPV 8B ENVELOP +82 82
>Stefan_Kac: AAEIJMN B5 AJE. +27 27
#note Tunneled on this and never saw JEAN/ENVELOP(E). Sim does like AJEE a little better, and I like it a lot better because it's more volatile+balanced and I'm already down big.
>Chris_Schneider: AAEIRRT F1 ARTERIA. +62 144
>Stefan_Kac: AGIMNRZ A1 MIRZA +80 107
>Chris_Schneider: DHINOOS H6 DI.HOONS +65 209
>Chris_Schneider: DHINOOS -- -65 144
>Stefan_Kac: AGNNNOU 1D GU.NO +24 131
#note Missing GO(A)NNA, which sim likes 2 better than GU(A)NO. Seems not so clear cut to me, but in this particular case missing the chance to unload an extra N did end up hurting bigtime.
>Chris_Schneider: DHINOOS 9G HOD +26 170
>Stefan_Kac: AGINNNO 4C NON. +8 139
#note Took many minutes here. What I really wanted was a play in the center that blocks HOD(S) plays in column J, since such plays are the best way for opp to muck up the board before I have a chance to come back. But this isn't possible. Sim loves 7E N(A)NA. I saw it but didn't want to part with the very valuable A, given that they are already halfway depleted. In hindsight, this was a sizable mistake as no A could possibly be worth 11 more points than an O. I also don't really want to kill floaters in this situation. Again talked myself out of a fairly obvious best play.

#note FML.
>Chris_Schneider: EF B1 EF +24 268
>Stefan_Kac: ACGINTY 11I CAGY +28 178
#note Hated this, but the only realistic alternative is CAY, which forks for esses that I don't hold and gives me one less shot at drawing one. Notable Scr----- analysts have warned against keeping the G just for -ING, and I definitely think that applies here given the board and the ess situation. Would be curious whether they prefer opening multiple ess hooks or just one.
>Chris_Schneider: BGHILS 12D BLIGHS +39 307
>Chris_Schneider: BGHILS -- -39 268
>Stefan_Kac: EINPRST 12C PTERINS +77 255
#note I'm running on fumes and have overstudied, so I have to stare at this for minutes rather than the seconds it reasonably ought to take. Need to get better at preparing without simply frying my brain to a crisp.
>Chris_Schneider: BGHILS H12 .IGH +24 292
>Stefan_Kac: AAEEUUV 13A UVEA +24 279
#note Fun draw. I think I have to play through it here, which leaves this or 14F VA(G)UE as the only realistic options. I opt for points, for leaving the NIGH floaters open, and for giving myself a place to score in case opp has a lightish bingo elsewhere on the board. Opp taking the scoring spot is not ideal but doesn't sink me the way a bingo after VA(G)UE would. For what it's worth (probably not too much), sim does prefer UVEA by a coupla points.
>Chris_Schneider: BBLS A12 B.LB +33 325

>Chris_Schneider: CDDLSTT - +0 325
>Stefan_Kac: ?ADEEFT 2H DEFEATs +89 406
>Chris_Schneider: DIORSSU K1 D.SIROUS +68 393
>Stefan_Kac: ACEIMOR 14J MA.ER +34 440
#note Soooo close to CHERIMOYA!! Time and brain alike are almost fully depleted, so I slap this down after about 30 secs. 4-ply sim greatly prefers MI(K)RA, which I used to know. Sim likes some 8K plays much better, so maybe there are very specific blocks that this achieves and very specific floaters that opp cannot bingo through. I am not going to see that most days, and certainly not with seconds rather than minutes on my clock.
>Chris_Schneider: TTWX 4I TW.XT +30 423
>Stefan_Kac: ACEIIOT 8K .TOIC +24 464
#note 14C ETIC prevents opp from going out, but there was no time to figure that out. This is adequate.
>Chris_Schneider: DLOW 14C WOLD +23 446
>Chris_Schneider: (AEI) +6 452
#note Def one of the wilder live games I've been involved in. On top of it all, our math was terrible. The score we agreed on was 460-438.
