#player1 KM Kene Mezue
#player2 JJB John J. Bulten
>KM: AHOT 8E OATH +14 14
#note 2:08 [22:52] KM has come back to Florida for a rematch against JJB and Ed Liebfried, after the big Fort Lauderdale winter 2019 event. JJB also hopes to meet later near KM's home of North Dakota. KM lays down oath 8d, prompting an um from his opponent, and masterfully announces he is not done yet, moving the play to 8e. If this is an S signal, he does not play an S for quite awhile; it is certainly a good diversion.
>JJB: BDEEGRT F6 BR.G +12 12
#note 3:18 [21:48] Off stride, JJB writes re-begot but then does not play begot 16 with its obvious leave. Brag/garb are 7.8 behind, or 8.8 behind because he underscores brag by 1.
>KM: AM 9F .AM +17 31
#note 1:53 [20:59]
>JJB: ?DEEINT D8 lENITED +71 83
#note 1:04 [20:38] Given the choice between oaths, game, or B, JJB would rather play loath if only there's a word with an L designation. Helpfully there is.
>KM: EHIR C11 HIRE +28 59
#note ~2:19 [~18:40] KM lays down hire and looks at this fine play awhile before committing, tempting JJB to match his crossword skills.
>JJB: AFGLMRV B11 GLAM +39 122
#note 0:10 [20:28] JJB attempts bravado by banging down this parallel in 10 seconds and announcing the score before being totally sure. It happens to be the right decision but JJB does not usually play New York style.
>KM: IILN 6F .LINI +9 68
#note ~2:02 [16:38] Good, but there is another dump available: medii 14b 10 (2.4 better on partial rack).
>JJB: EFNOPRV I9 PROVEN +27 149
#note 1:47 [18:41] JJB looks skeptically for an h1 play, which is probably why he doesn't see renvoi 39 (8.2 ahead) and plays the second-best instead.
>KM: EFY H13 FEY +34 102
#note 0:51 [15:47] Another respectable play for being down one blank, but a high scorer is needed soon.
>JJB: EFINSSW 12A F... +11 160
#note 4:56 [13:45] With this rack JJB wants to slow down and preserve the synergy, and in fact his leave is +18.4, but maybe the only thing slowing down is the time perception, not significantly the turnover. Wifes/blinis is a standard plural combo that gets the nominal 30 for one S, and preserves NS (+10.7) for 11.3 better combo. JJB had better be more sure of blinis next time.
>KM: EIW 12I .IEW +20 122
#note 0:24 [15:23]
>JJB: EINSSWZ M7 WIZENS +43 203
#note 3:44 [10:01] Why double two tiles and open an easy triple when you can double the whole word (winzes/wizens k1 44) and open a difficult nonuple? Or, to keep synergy, play wiz/ow/fez 35 (5.1 higher).
>KM: JNX 8L J.NX +78 200
#note 0:45 [14:38] KM knocks back the bingo equivalent with just the right tiles to rebound within 3 of a tie.
>JJB: ?AEIQST 5J QI +33 236
#note 1:24 [8:37] JJB is about to cash the Q after the Z for a total of 76, an equivalent to KM's 78. Qi 33 is best, but blini allows a dozen respectable Q plays.
>KM: EILTT 14H ..TITLE +18 218
#note 2:55 [11:43] KM now hunts for a bingo that is unforthcoming. A long extension might be enough, especially given the S on his next rack.
>JJB: ?ADEOST O7 O.iDATES +74 310
#note 1:18 [7:19] JJB is pretty confident of scoring here, although after sedation/wo and oxidates/entitles he misses moving the D to the premium for one more point with extrados 75. KM is silently thanked for the extra 8.
>KM: AERSY L1 YEARS +36 254
#note 2:27 [9:16] Quackle likes yen 11k 27 better by 3.7 due to partial leave, and that agrees with the rule of thumb of an S worth about 8 points diff. Perhaps KM has nonuple letters, but cashing the Y seems a more important motive.
>JJB: ABCCOUU 1L .UCA +27 337
#note 1:04 [6:15] The liability of those edge premiums is their rebound potential. Yuca 27 is just ahead of baccy 42 on leave, and it has another benefit ....
>KM: EP - +0 254
#note 0:59 [8:17] KM does not indicate he has heard of the strange fruit common to Florida markets, and JJB would agree that the name certainly looks like a misspelling. The challenge over the nonuple lane after 59 seconds is unsuccessful; this opportunity cost is 22.5 behind pen 11k 23 and probably other plays.
>JJB: ABCOOTU N4 BACO. +21 358
#note 3:30 [2:45] JJB supplements his yuca with bacon, resorting to the comfortable OTU "out" leave (albeit -9.0). Bouton 16 gets more turnover and an improvement value of 5.5 based on AC (+1.5). Coz/jo 23 also scores. For some reason his notes say woon*.
>KM: EP 11K PE. +23 277
#note 2:20 [5:57] Now KM takes the best play for this turnover; he is closer to a bingo but running out of tiles.
>JJB: DDEOTUU 3J DU.D +12 370
#note 1:22 [1:23] Quackle is programmed to exchange 7 with 8 in bag as a static value of 10.0, so 6- and 7-tile trades rate better than say due 2j 8. Duad 3j 12 rates 8.5 below trading all, given 3 vowels in leave and more to draw.
>KM: K H5 K. +6 283
#note 1:35 [4:22] KM has probably gotten his second S.
>JJB: ELOOOTU 10I .OO +10 380
#note 0:55.8 [0:27.2] JJB is glad there is a way to dump 2 Os.
>KM: GU 15F GU. +7 290
#note ~0:22 [~4:00] KM doubts himself for emptying the bag, but there are surely still good bingo chances!
>JJB: AELORTU 2D TORULAE +66 446
#note 0:11.3 [0:15.9] About the only draws that would have helped KM were varroas/ski and rosaria/ad if he had begun with 5 of those letters. But even there, JJB gets first crack and plays outline/ed to go out, or something like volte/ed to block; so KM was right to doubt his bag-emptying. In reality, after verifying KM's rack, JJB is shocked to see a 4-voweled 7 drop into his consciousness after only two glances at his own rack, and it plays. JJB too hurriedly throws the tiles down loosely and announces multiple scoring attempts before and after hitting the clock; KM barely has time to consult his own tiles. It could have been a squeaker but it is another blowout.
>JJB: (AINORSV) +20 466
#note JJB has been accumulating blowouts today, and his Z and Q were a match for KM's bingo equivalent even without JJB's 3 real bingos. KM is playing accurately but not dramatically, and being uncertain of a 4 did not help. Known points available: KM 0, JJB 2. Overall points available: KM 28.6+, JJB 48.4.
