#note I felt lucky Austin didn't open with a play with an E here, as I might have lost a turn trying brassery*. It's only BRASSERIE.

#note D7 ABRADE is a nice high scoring play, but it does not do nearly as well as the fishing plays in the sim. By valuation, my play is the sim winner, though F10 ADO is close. C7 AA is not as good because S ending bingos won't play on column B, and D7 ABO/OBA are not as good because if he has an A he can make C7-C9 plays killing both lanes at once.

#note Not bad, but I missed one better bingo: 7G KERMODES.

#note I had this lined up before his play, but I did notice that he set up a spot for GLUTAEI. I chose LIGATURE because I would still be slightly chasing, and I liked creating the S and D hooks for volatility. Plus, I hoped he might not know or remember LIGATURED. After the game I spoke to Austin about it, and he said, "I hoped you might not know LIGATURED."

#note This is not a bad play, but I missed one better spot. LUMMY or DUMMY plays nicely at G4.

>David_Koenig: ELMNPQW 5J PWN +25 291
#note The extra tile turnover of PLEW would often be a good idea here when holding a Q. However, it increases his scoring possibilities so much in this particular position. If I weren't holding the Q, I would seriously consider a play like 7G MEWL to score with the DUMP hook later.

#note I took some time to catch up on tracking here, and then it took me a while to see FLEUR, even though I knew I wanted to make FLE- plays in this spot. I think this was a product of fatigue during the eighth game of the day. Though I eventually did find my best play, it was enough to get me in time pressure in a tight endgame. Furthermore, it was probably evidence that my brain wasn't working as well as I needed it to be.
>Austin_Shin: ENO F8 .EON +18 430
#note Now we're getting down to a weird endgame. I've drawn most of the scoring tiles aside from the J, and Austin is likely to have a glut of E's and I's. Although he is likely to score well with the J, as long as I can score with the other heavy tiles on multiple plays and go out more quickly than him, I should have a good chance to win. However, with no E's, I can't do much about the possibility of JEE on row 15. I thought that I was likelier than he was to win this endgame with best play, but my brain was having an impossible time finding good plays with the tiles I had. I also thought that if he didn't have JEE or needed to dump extra I's, he might want to play AJI 6M so maybe I should take that out. That's not very clear thinking, because if he has to make a play like AJI, it's probably going to give me good comebacks on column O. I didn't see good possibilities with FNOOT if I played MICH. I couldn't figure out whether HOC N6 was a good or bad play. It scored well, but it might just give him easy points with EIDE O8, which might be bad for him if he has the J or good for him if I draw it.
>David_Koenig: CFHNOOT N6 HO +28 460
#note In the end I decided on this play on the basis that I was very likely to draw one of the I's for O2 CONFIT, or if I didn't it would mean that Austin had three I's and was likely to lose. I didn't even think about the fact that I set up a spot for him to play LOD/DJIN until after I pressed my clock, and I was pissed off at myself for missing that. This is a hard pre-endgame that Quackle doesn't analyze completely correctly, but it turns out there are several winning moves for me. Some lines involve needing to see the FAA/FAAN spot on C7. Some involve a J stick when he chases points on column O. HO is not a guaranteed win, and in fact should lose with the way the tiles fell. Both of the plays MICH and HOC that I considered before it should win.
>Austin_Shin: DEEIIJN 8L ..DI +28 458
#note O5 NIDI leaving JEE to go out wins for Austin. Everything else including the play he chose should lose. Unfortunately, I was too short of time and brain-fried to realize this.
>David_Koenig: CFINOT 3L T.IN +4 464
#note The best play here is a play I saw, TONIC G11, which blocks JEE but allows another scoring play of JIN. What I didn't see was that the F it held behind played nicely at C7 for 20 points. But I didn't even need those points. If I had time to do the math, I would have realized that dropping the F anywhere, for even 5 points, would have still won for me after JIN. I wrongly intuited that I wasn't scoring enough with TONIC and he was getting too much for JIN that I would lose. Austin also found another way to win for me, which was L2 CONN, setting up N1 FIT to go out. I just couldn't see a way to construct an out in two and keep scoring on both turns. I incorrectly thought I was going to lose and got desperate, setting up a high scoring CONF to go out and hoping he would miss it, knowing that him just making a play through the N would beat me easily. I knew it wasn't a good play, but as I got down under a minute I couldn't think of anything better.

#note And that's how I gave the game away.
>David_Koenig: CFO K5 .OF +9 473
#note And here desperately short of time I couldn't even see my outplay of CORF or many other better plays.
>Austin_Shin: E 13A ..E. +14 511
#note I finished with 0:28 on my clock. Austin had 1:00 left.
>Austin_Shin: (C) +6 517
#note If I had won this game, as I should have, I would have finished day 2 of New Orleans with a 13-3 record, with Jason Keller at 12-4, Ben Schoenbrun at 11-5, and Austin all the way back at 10.5-5.5. I ended up getting severely outdrawn on the final day of the tournament, going 0-4. So if that had happened, I wasn't going to win the tournament anyway. But by far my biggest blown opportunities in the tournament weren't on the final day. They were in the first game of day two against Chris Lipe, and in the last game of day two, i.e., this one. So I feel worse about going 5-3 on a day when I should have gone 7-1 than I do about going 0-4 on a day when the tiles dictated that the best I could have done was maybe 1-3.
