#note If you had asked me during the game, I would have told you that I was 100% sure that DISMAY took the back L hook, and about 70-80% sure it took the back D as well. My initial thought when I saw my rack was DEANERY hooking DISMAYD, but then I saw the 103 point spot making FY. I missed that there was actually a 106 point play of 13B RENAYED. Frankly, I was unsure enough of the DISMAYD hook that I might have opted for BEANERY even if I had seen RENAYED.

#note Best. Better than DELUBRA to avoid making an X spot at 10B.

#note Despite feeling that things were going well for me on the previous turns, I'm suddenly in some trouble here. I'm down by over 50 with one vowel on my rack and it is likely that David will increase the lead on the next turn. There is one S remaining, but given the large number of tiles remaining and the complete randomness of his rack, NEB setting up SNEB with at minimum a hook of MONGS seemed like a strong gambit, both to clean up my rack and threaten a huge score, and to possibly interfere with his plans and get him to make a low scoring block. After the game David thought it was a great idea even though it didn't quite work out for me. Simulation loves NEB, making it the clear winner, about one point above the second best play, which is just SNEB.
>David_Eldar: IKRTU N1 TU.RIK +42 336
#note David had no S and couldn't do much about SNEB, so he just scored a lot and turned over a lot of tiles to try to get to the last S while partially blocking the lane. It worked out as well for him as possible.
>David_Koenig: GIMNOOS 1B MOOINGS +101 349
>David_Koenig: GIMNOOS -- -101 248
#note I was 100% sure that SOOMING was a word here, but I could not remember whether it had a valid anagram of MOOINGS*. This is something I've botched many times while studying this rack on Zyzzyva, and yet I had still failed to implant it in memory. BAAINGS and LOWINGS are both good, so it would seem perfectly natural for MOOINGS* to be good, but it is not. I debated whether to attempt MOOINGS* at the top or just take my points for SOOMING. I convinced myself that taking the 1H spot was important enough and that MOOINGS* was likely enough. The fact that I had a second spot for SOOMING hooking SHES gave me a bit of insurance if MOOINGS* was challenged off. Of course, I was wrong about the word, but it turns out with what David had, it would have made no difference in the final result of this game. He caught a big break that his move blocked the valid bingo I did have on row 1 and that he drew his own there.
>David_Eldar: DEERSTW 1E WRESTED +101 437
>David_Koenig: GIMNOOS O5 SOOMING +88 336
#note We would be in this same situation with me on the move if I hadn't phonied first. Of course it's better to have the turn, but down by 101 I would still be a sure loser. Even another bingo wouldn't catch me up.

>David_Koenig: AFTU (challenge) +5 357
#note Blocking EULOGIAE.
>David_Eldar: AEGILOU C1 UGALI +24 478
#note David found his best endgame play. He originally laid down the cute GUINEP C4 but then he realized it would give me an out of TUFA. Oddly, this was the second time he played UGALI against me in this tournament.

>David_Eldar: (AT) +4 495
#note So a three point error on BEANERY instead of RENAYED and a word knowledge error on MOOINGS*, which might have been a serious error but turned out not to matter. Other than that I was perfect on every other move of this game. Three losses in a row now. |
