#note -6.5. i score much less next turn with ZETA than with I7 EGG or I6 TEGG.

>karl_higby: ADILMOS 10A AMIDOLS +73 118
>cesar: APRWXYY 9A PAX +45 101
#note i didn't consider leaving the A open. it's not like i'm scared of triple triples or whatever, it's just too easy for him to score there. i figure i could use the 10J spot next turn. maybe i'll draw YAWEY or something. but 10I PYX only scores 3 less and leaves a much more workable leave. i somehow scored PAX as 55 too, which may have screwed up my judgment. (-2)
>karl_higby: AEILO H1 EOLIA. +21 139
>cesar: EIRRWYY 10I EYRY +35 136
#note hard to judge 7I WIRY vs 10I EYRY here. it seemed difficult to give up 9 pts. -2
>karl_higby: ORV A9 ..RVO +14 153
>cesar: AEHIRSW K1 WEARISH +86 222
#note this is game 3 of the tournament; i'm 2-0, plus a large spread, and i'm focused, well-rested, and considering defense, offense, his last play, etc. it seemed likely to me that after PARVO he kept a decent leave, with low point tiles, and that the S is on his rack a lot of the time (and probably an R). i know the equity play here is L8 HAYWIRES, and old Cesar would play that no matter what, but new Cesar knows how to do inferences and when to sacrifice 8 pts for a significantly better position. with an inference of ERS, WEARISH just slightly sims above or close to neck and neck with HAYWIRES. i liked making this play and thought i had a good case for it.

#note i like Quackle's top choice of B1 VEINLET here for drawing the S and blank, but the board sucks after it! so LIE has got to be better.

#note this is a great play
>cesar: EIIR 11D ER +11 442
#note this is what happened here: i immediately saw his (R)UsE and counted it as 21. I wrote down 21 on my scoresheet and realized this would tie the game if I played VIER. I was down to about 45 seconds and didn't want a tie. I had such little time because of what I thought were difficult decisions throughout this game; i remember spending forever on VENTUREd trying to find something better, DUI, LIE, etc. so i blocked it as best as i could and did not see DEDUCE at all -- i had under 30 seconds by the time i hit the clock, which i needed in order to play off my i's in case he didn't go out. if I had seen that RUsE actually scored 20 I would have just gone out and taken the 1-pt win. i lost this game by being unable to do math. i remember thinking how much it sucks to spend nearly an hour of my life trying to win just to blow it at the very end on such a dumb mistake. but i guess this is why we play Scrabble. i do like the game.
>karl_higby: ?EU D10 ..dU.E +25 447
#note he of course has many winning plays, like RUE 4K
>karl_higby: (II) +4 451
#note the reason I take losses like this so hard is because i know myself - it's a self-fulfilling prophecy basically. when i give up a win like this i'm not gonna get it back, and that thinking makes me tilt and steam in future games. i'm less careful about defense, inferencing, and even play-finding. later in the tournament i played (D)OZER instead of (D)OZED for example. i wouldn't do that in this game. i think a lot of my contemporaries have a phase where they steam/tilt, and then they stopped, but i seem to be unable to let this go. i think at my best i have as good a chance as anyone of winning this tourney, i almost won BAT which also had a very strong field, but it's hard for me to be at my best when i start losing, especially due to dumb mistakes. i really want to work on this.
