>Jeff_Cook: AILOV 8D VOILA +24 24
>Joshua_Sokol: DDEILOP 7E PLED +20 20
#note First move of nationals! I went for lots of defense here, but missed 9E IDOL, which is just as defensive.
DIDO is also pretty defensive at 9F, but I like IDOL a lot.
As with most tournaments my first move took 5 minutes to make because I try to make sure I get into the groove of playing, don't want to miss something early on.
>Jeff_Cook: U E6 U.. +5 29
>Joshua_Sokol: BDEINOO 6G BO +13 33
#note 6G BOO seemed normal but I really shouldn't open anything up after U(PO). However, BOO would have worked out just fine if I trust Jeff's post-mortem analysis. 6G DOOB is also an option I didn't consider.
>Jeff_Cook: II -II +0 29
#note forcing an exchange is good though
>Joshua_Sokol: DEEEINO -EEO +0 33
#note once again I don't think I should open anything with D8 (V)IDEO.
>Jeff_Cook: II -II +0 29
>Joshua_Sokol: ACDEINY 5H CYANIDE +83 116
#note and so it begins.
>Jeff_Cook: IX 6N XI +50 79
#note not sure if this was good or bad for Jeff (drawing the X)
>Joshua_Sokol: ?ADEMOT 4J TAMED +42 158
#note it wasn't until the next game that I realized in an unusual manner what word I had missed here. I made a point not to check what I might have missed, since it would negatively affect my game to do so.
>Jeff_Cook: ATW 3K TAW +34 113
>Joshua_Sokol: ?CEINOT 2L COIN +28 186
#note once again happy to keep things closed here and wait for a better time to play a bingo.
>Jeff_Cook: OR 6G ..OR +18 131
>Joshua_Sokol: ?ADEEIT O6 .DEATIvE +74 260
#note perfect, just what I was hoping for. Now I'm in a crushing position!
>Jeff_Cook: ?ABEEIR D8 .ERBIAgE +76 207
#note whoa, nevermind!
>Joshua_Sokol: AHMNNWZ 1M WHA +50 310
#note this is a lot of points. It's OK to leave the 3x3 open here.
>Jeff_Cook: FGIKNOS 10B FO.KINGS +76 283
#note I kind of liked this but it wasn't super fresh in my mind like I expected it to be, so I held for a while. I felt I could not afford to lose a tempo and a turn here and that my position was dominant even if FORKINGS* was left on.
>Joshua_Sokol: IMNNRTZ 15A MIZ.N +48 358
>Jeff_Cook: EEY 9I EYE +10 293
>Joshua_Sokol: JNNORTV K8 J.TON +24 382
>Jeff_Cook: EHU L11 HUE +21 314
>Joshua_Sokol: AGLNRUV 14D .UV +15 397
#note I started getting worried about really bad case scenarios where he bingos and I have no response. I felt this move was the most limiting even though it left the I in VERBIAGE, but I was not worried about that I. I could pretty easily outrun an air-ball like that one. V(A)GAL, which I also saw, limits his options even more, but when he does bingo, it might score 80 points, something I really don't want. M13 LUV sims best, since the V is not really problematic and it blocks the two juiciest lanes, row 14 and column M.
>Jeff_Cook: OS E10 .OS +24 338
#note seemed weird that he would block the I, now all I have to do is block column M and row 14.
>Joshua_Sokol: AGLNRRR J12 GRR +10 407
#note much better would be GRR on the other side of NU. Somehow I missed that that fit as well. Eek.
>Jeff_Cook: TU 14A UT +12 350
>Joshua_Sokol: AAEGLNR 8K .AG +12 419
#note although N9 NAG scores 3 more and still leaves two spots for the Q, I would rather not draw the Q, and playing 3 tiles off seems counterproductive to that end. Now I just have to avoid Jeff bingo-ing to the F in FORKINGS and I'll be good. PRESI(F)TS and SPORTI(F)S are a threat. I might be better off playing NAG anyway because it wins more often than (J)AG. I can still hold on to my lead after NAG+ SPORTI(F)S/PRESI(F)TS and drawing the Q
>Jeff_Cook: OP M10 PO +10 360
>Joshua_Sokol: AELNQRS 12C Q.. +12 431
#note I was really afraid that he might have a bingo to the F here. Paranoia, sure, but it helped to see that I could still win if I blocked it and he blocked my Q spot. But clearly he missed Q(IS), as PO looked like an attempt to stick me.
>Jeff_Cook: EFILRST H10 .RIFTS +33 393
#note was hoping he would try GIFTER*
>Joshua_Sokol: AELNRS 14L SAL +13 444
#note -3 to D2 LEARN
>Jeff_Cook: EL N9 LE +13 406
>Jeff_Cook: EL -- -13 393
#note this was sooo weird to me, because I was just imagining the laughter I would get from top players playing phony twos. I really wanted a lot of phony twos to be played this tournament, but I haven't heard of anything other than this!
>Joshua_Sokol: ENR D4 ERN +8 452
