#player2 Will_Anderson Will Anderson
>Jim_Burlant: FIMORST 8F FROM +18 18
#note Failure to see the longer plays hits again, but this turns out to be a minor miss. Best is what should have been the obvious 8H MOTIF.
>Will_Anderson: IOP 9H POI +15 15
>Jim_Burlant: AABIRST K5 BARISTA +92 110
#note This also plays on row 10 for low 70's, but this scores 92 and is clearly best. Just shy of 82% to win in a short sim, but not for long:
>Will_Anderson: ?ADGITU F8 .ATIGUeD +64 79
#note Only bingo for Will.
>Jim_Burlant: AEIIOUW 15F .OWIE +27 137
#note Can someone please explain how I can possibly miss AUDIO? Not seeing what should have been an obvious play resulted not only in a huge comeback for Will, but my struggling with racks for a number of turns. I saw the danger with the vowel placement, but unable to find AUDIO I incorrectly thought my only options were this or an exchange. 15D AUDIO is clearly best. This is the sim silver medalist, but that's only because none of the other options afterwards are any good. This is a much bigger mistake than Quackle says it is, and Will's next play makes clear why:
>Will_Anderson: CEHTW 14J WECHT +55 134
>Jim_Burlant: ACDINUU L10 ADUN. +21 158
#note I saw L1 UNCIA but failed to recognize that it played at L2 for the same points. Had I seen the L2 play I would have played that. I saw this and felt it gave back the least of anything else I saw, so that was that. L2 UNCIA looks best here. And things are about to go from bad to worse.
>Will_Anderson: EENOTTU 6G OUTE.TEN +62 196
#note What does Will do with this garbage if I play UNCIA?
>Jim_Burlant: CEIKUVY 5D ICKY +31 189
#note Another play I hated. Racks like this are playable but I have a very hard time processing this much clunk. In situations like this I'll err on the side of turning tiles just to give myself a rack I can handle. With YUCK not playing, I never saw what should have been the obvious YUK at E9, presumably because I couldn't get myself to consider anything that didn't clear three of my four counters. This isn't the worst thing I can do, but it's definitely not best, as I'm still keeping the noxious UV combination and this opens up way too many easy hooks.
>Will_Anderson: AQ L4 QA. +28 224
>Jim_Burlant: ENNOOUV 13L .OUN +20 209
#note I finally get a play right. I also considered VOGUE 12D but wanted to defend against the S as well as balance the rack. When Will and I recounted the game post-mortem, Will's comment was this came down exactly when it needed to. Regardless of whether Quackle thinks this or VOGUE is best - a sim can't decide - it turned out to be the best choice in this particular game.
>Will_Anderson: ?AENNRS C5 mANNERS +71 295
#note C3 bingoes (e.g.: iNSANER/iNSNARE/etc) May score more but this does a better job slamming the door shut on me. I'm in a world of hurt now - Will is 90% to win.
>Jim_Burlant: EILNORV M2 OVIN. +32 241
#note Right idea, wrong execution. Obviously I need to play down the M column, but which play? Q likes M2 EVILER for 36 and VOILE M2 leaves the best ENR combo. However the V isn't the best tile to play through. That said, this gives back a front B hook with a B still unseen. Not sure which option is best. This did eventually work in my favor.
>Will_Anderson: MV D4 V.M +20 315
>Jim_Burlant: DEILRSY 8A LI.Y +33 274
#note RIDLEYS doesn't play, and the only 8's are DIALYSER, SOLDIERY, YIELDERS, and DRESSILY, which means I have no playable bingo. The play here is to open up and score while I do it. This is clearly best.
>Will_Anderson: BET 1M BET +26 341
#note I got nervous as I saw him reach towards the northeast corner to block, but was relieved just the same when I saw row 2 was still open for the easy Z bomb:
>Jim_Burlant: DEGLRSZ 2J ZER.S +72 346
#note And I get a big assist from the tile bag. Back in the game; up from 15% to 29% winning chances.
>Will_Anderson: ALP E9 LAP +22 363
#note Safe to say, Will doesn't have the X.
>Jim_Burlant: ADEGGIL 8K .GGED +30 376
#note I initially put down DEALIGN O7 for 33 and pulled it up for two reasons. First, I wasn't entirely sure of it while I was, otoh, 100% sure of IGGED. Secondly, with only one A unseen, I assumed he had it and I wanted to preserve the A for Z underlaps. Quackle is conflicted, since the two-ply sim and Championship player disagree wtih each other. A sim says O7 DEALIGN is best, presumably for turnover to chase the X, J, and/or S as well as the points. It thinks LEGGIN and IGGED are each 2% weaker than the previous choice. Championship player says O8 LEGGIN is best, with DEALIGN having the highest equity but winning 2% less often than LEGGIN. I'm guessing that Q doesn't like IGGED because it shortchanges me on tile turnover at a crucial juncture.
>Will_Anderson: EHR B6 HE.R +35 398
>Jim_Burlant: AADIJLO 14B JAIL.D +29 405
#note During our recount, Will's comment: "A BRUTAL position." And that it was. Take a good look at that pool. He threatens A1 FLEXES, FIXERS, etc. And if I play this, if he's got LOX or FOX, I'm clobbered that way. I felt my only option was to roll the dice: if he's got the X, I lose; If OX are still in the bag, I steal the win. Replaying the game in Quackle with after-the-fact knowledge that the bag contained LRX suggests that my only win is to play the counternituitive JO 13I for 23, and it is left as an exercise to the student to confirm. This mistake cost me whatever shot I had at this game.
