>Olaugh: OVW 8G VOW +18 18
#note there was a chance I was going to play Wiegand for the tournament, but he had already clinched. Meanwhile, John had won 9 games in a row or something like that, so this was the game for second place.
>JD: EGHILOO 9H HOG +19 19
#note during this game, I was faced with a problem I had never experienced in my 2000+ game Scrabble tournament career, which was an intense, blinding glare. It had snowed outside and was now sunny, and as a result of the sun reflecting off the snow, the board was almost impossible to look at directly. I probably should've asked to move somewhere, but instead figured I'd tough it out. now I understand why people make false confessions during police examinations! anyway, this is not appealing play to make, but this or HOI are the plays I want to make against John.
>Olaugh: OSST 10F TOSS +18 36
#note john plays plays at two different speeds: either instantly, or after agonizing for 2 minutes. most of the time when playing him you just have to hope that he's having the kind of racks where he has to think. this was not one of those moves.
>JD: AEIKLOU F6 KOA +27 46
#note pretty close between this, KUIA or AUTO. He has at least one more S in hand, which makes AUTO a weaker play - AUTO might give him a scoring play with a power tile on row 12.
>Olaugh: AFGNO 11C GANOF +25 61
#note he could take HOGG/GANOF, but he's keeping the S hook open.
>JD: DEILLLU C11 .ULL +10 56
#note this is not a strong play with or without an S inference (although inferring the S makes it a bit weaker still). DEIL doesn't do anything on this board. I need to flip over tiles and try to draw a blank or the last S or something useful, so plays like LIGULE or even DUALLIE at D9 look stronger
>Olaugh: EGINRSS K5 RESIGNS +91 152
>JD: ADEILPT 4G TALIPED +83 139
>JD: ADEILPT -- -83 56
#note I'm not a big fan of making excuses, but there's no way I would miss PILEATED without the glare issue this game. I tried PRESIGNS because I felt like I needed to get a bingo down this turn to stay in range, and it seemed worth the 20% chance of it being good. at the end of the day, seems better to treat the whole situation as an Act of God rather than get too angry about it, baby Alexander is a hungry growing boy and if the $200 feeds him extra sushi I'll be pretty happy.
>Olaugh: BE J6 BE +22 174
>JD: ADEILPT D9 AL.P +20 76
#note I'm obviously in terrible shape at this point. I only have one real lane (row 15), and the esses are gone. there are a couple of tries - ALIPED at L1, ILIAD at 8K, my play and TALIPED at 14A. I think ALAP is probably the most useful play because it reopens the otherwise dead top-left of the board, whereas the other lanes on the board I can probably open at later points in time.
>Olaugh: AENT 6D TA.E +8 182
#note the fact that ALAP drew the response it did illustrates its utility - John had to sacrifice a lot of points to shut off the new threat I set up.
>JD: DDEIIJT 14A JI.TED +36 112
>Olaugh: DOO A12 DO.O +42 224
>JD: BCDEIOU 8K .ODIC +27 139
#note IODIC probably produces the most useful lanes here, but the BEU leave is pretty laughable. Maybe CUBED at 5A is a better try, but it seemed like John would probably score a bunch from the C and then I wouldn't have too much going on. I kinda like that after IODIC I can draw the Z and immediately have BEZ for 52.
>Olaugh: ?CEINRU 15F INCURvE +80 304
>Olaugh: ADEITX (challenge) +5 309
#note there are a couple of double C bingos available here that are cool (CINCTURE, CRUNCHIE)
>JD: ABEINUW E3 NAW.B +24 163
#note the game is effectively over, but I gotta keep opening in case john gets distracted by his latest pet coding project. I guess I could also play NUBIA at 5A but WE is not a powerhouse leave.
>Olaugh: ADEITX M10 TAXIED +38 347
>JD: AEEINRU L11 EA +25 188
>Olaugh: AHIIRV O8 .HIVARI +16 363
>JD: AEFINRU M1 UNFAIRE. +76 264
>Olaugh: ELY 1L Y.LE +33 396
>JD: EENRTUZ D2 REZ +48 312
#note most of my plans for victory at this point are contingent over distracting john with ramen and then clubbing him on the back of the head, but why not give it a shot lol. the P and another T are both out which does not bode well for this setup, but there doesn't seem to be anything that big that I can draw on the right anyway, so gotta create something
>Olaugh: ?EMMPRT 1D TeMPER +44 440
#note guess he didn't see PREZ. MUMPER at 1A is 60
>JD: EINQTUY 3A QUE..Y +36 348
