#player2 Dave_Wiegand Dave Wiegand
>David_Koenig: DIINOOT 8H OOTID +16 16
#note Trading or playing short does not seem worth it. Other options include IDIOT 8H or OOTID 8E. I am fine with my choice, though there is not a big difference between it and these other choices.
>Dave_Wiegand: AOTY 7F OATY +23 23
>David_Koenig: EHINNNT 6B NINTH +31 47
#note Best. HENNIN 8A scores one more, but the balanced leave gives this play the edge.
>Dave_Wiegand: EJRR K7 J.RRE +24 47
>David_Koenig: EIKLNNT 8A TINKLE +51 98
#note Best.
>Dave_Wiegand: ADHNORS M2 HADRONS +81 128
>David_Koenig: ELLMNOV L1 VOLE +35 133
#note Best.
>Dave_Wiegand: ABGINRS 11H SAB.RING +61 189
>David_Koenig: GILMNRS H11 .LING +21 154
#note I did not think of MOHR, which Quackle liked. It is a nice find which manages the rack decently well, but the problem is that even though SLING is not a bad leave, it is going to be difficult to fit a lot of bingos onto this board. Also, keeping SLING with a G open in the triple lane is not great. I am unlikely to hit column O myself, which means that I am leaving Wiegand to free-roll on it. In retrospect, I stand by my play, as I think it is helpful to open another front on the board.
>Dave_Wiegand: AEUUV 12E UVU.AE +15 204
>David_Koenig: AILMORS 4E MORALIS.. +63 217
#note Best. ALGORISM scores one point less and opens up a huge 14B-F spot. Though I temporarily catch up, Wiegand will still have tempo, so keeping the multiple openings on rows 14 and 15 and column O is valuable.
>Dave_Wiegand: ??ACFGI 14B sCArFI.G +90 294
>David_Koenig: EEIPQRU 5A PIQUE +57 274
#note Best. My rack makes three sevens, but none of them fit.
>Dave_Wiegand: ABEEOSZ O9 BE.AZES +60 354
>David_Koenig: DEMPRTY 11D MY +24 298
#note The problem with MY N6 is that with no S's remaining it is hard to use the O column lane. Just dropping the Y at N6 is easy to block as there are so many E's remaining. My play sets up a somewhat subtle bingo lane at 10A using the RYU hook which only I have. The likely draws of AE and EE give me TAPERED and PETERED in that spot. A lesser player than Wiegand might have missed it.
>Dave_Wiegand: AFIW 10F WAIF +31 385
>Dave_Wiegand: OU (challenge) +5 390
#note I challenged ISLING. Wiegand smartly blocked the lane immediately.
>David_Koenig: ACDEPRT F3 P. +4 302
#note Fishing for one of the E's, and the APO hook might be hard for him to block if he does not have the U for UPO.
>Dave_Wiegand: OU 2E OU +11 401
>David_Koenig: ACDEERT B3 RE..D.CATE +65 367
>David_Koenig: ACDEERT -- -65 302
#note I thought this word had a good chance. I first saw preindicate* on the previous turn and would have been willing to try it until I realized I didn't have quite enough tiles. If there had been another P in the bag, I could have fished off the D instead of the P in the same spot to draw into PRINCIPATE.
>Dave_Wiegand: EOX N5 EXO +55 456
>David_Koenig: ACDEERT O1 TRACE +33 335
#note Best.
>Dave_Wiegand: DEETW 1A TWEED +33 489
>Dave_Wiegand: (DE) +6 495
#note I went a few seconds overtime, so 495-325 was the final score. In retrospect, I am happy with how I played in this one, despite the low score. Hypothetically, if reindicate* had been acceptable, I would be able to say that my play was pretty close to perfect, except for challenging ISLING of course. With this victory, Wiegand clinched first place in the 2017 California Open.
