#player1 Ross_Brown Ross Brown
#player2 Joshua_Sokol Joshua Sokol
>Ross_Brown: AINZ H5 NAZI +26 26
>Joshua_Sokol: DEHRUVW 6F WH.RVED +33 33
#note Was pretty sure it was just WHARVE, but I knew WHARVED* was phony, and wasn't sure about WHARVE. So I played the phony so that if it didn't get challenged, I wouldn't have to worry about hooks. I took too long to play this, though.
>Ross_Brown: EIINO L4 IO.INE +16 42
#note Ross didn't think twice about the word, though, since it gave him an easy vowel dump.
>Joshua_Sokol: ?ANSTUY 5K Y.U +22 55
#note Aha! I knew I must have missed something. I saw UNSTAYED, but didn't think that was a valid word. But I missed UNHASTY. Gosh.
>Ross_Brown: ACDDE 8J DA.CED +30 72
>Joshua_Sokol: ?ANRSTX 10L SAX +34 89
#note But this miss was the worst of all. Let me all remind you that I am now rated 1953, and I miss things like DEXTRANS, UNHASTY on two consecutive turns.
>Ross_Brown: BEEER 7D BREE.E +33 105
>Joshua_Sokol: ?GGNRRS 4J GR.N +13 102
#note N4 GRR. I also apparently miss 3-letter words.
>Ross_Brown: EFIW 8A WIFE +38 143
>Joshua_Sokol: ?GNRSST B7 R.NGToSS +74 176
#note I also miss 9-letter words. I wonder if you can determine the word I missed here! Wow. Not familiar with that one, but it has a Collins-only fun anagram.
>Ross_Brown: ?AEINPR O1 sPRAINE. +83 226
#note Ross also had a cool 9 here. UNPAIRED and UNREPAID look best.
>Joshua_Sokol: AEJOOPT A12 POET +37 213
#note Now, in this unfavorable position, I opted to try and outscore Ross instead of going for a more bingo-oriented approach. Knowing Ross the S may not stay open long, despite the score being close. In any case the alternative was A12 JO (JOE being too variant), but I liked this. I have many spots to score with my J.
>Ross_Brown: OTV 9I VOT. +16 242
>Joshua_Sokol: AHJOORT J2 JO. +27 240
#note Now here I felt confident that I could win if I took the scoring route and minimized variance. I decided to block the S for that reason. This may have been too cocky. I might have been better off being aggressive. But it looked like I had the upper hand now. I felt like the momentum was there, despite still being behind.
>Ross_Brown: AIMNO 5B AMNIO +20 262
#note and I was right!
>Joshua_Sokol: AHLMORT 4B LOATH +38 278
#note Now I am in the lead.
>Ross_Brown: ABD 3A BAD +27 289
>Joshua_Sokol: FGLMRTU 9D GULF +18 296
#note And now I am not. Well, I would have been, except with my bad draw I chickened out of BEGULF for 6 more.
>Ross_Brown: KO A1 KO. +27 316
>Joshua_Sokol: CEMQRTY -Q +0 296
#note And as it goes, I now draw the Q with no U or I, therefore nowhere to play. I felt completely backed up into the wall. This was the determining factor in me winning the tournament. Not because of a brilliant play I made, but by the sheer luck that led to me winning this particular game, that nobody should have won under and circumstance at this stage. I almost ran out of time deciding what to do. In the end I make a horrible exchange, because I can't decide what letters to keep. I decide I have to draw an L for XYLEM, but if I don't I can score with G1 CYME. In any case, a play definitely stands out here, and it's C12 MET. I will most likely be able to unload my Q next turn or the turn after. FWIW exch. Q is actually ranked 3rd among all exchanges.
>Ross_Brown: EO C12 OE +14 330
>Joshua_Sokol: CELMRTY N10 .YLEM +34 330
#note And there I go with the best draw I could hope for, probably. Now I have to avoid the Q or draw something big with it, neither of which are very likely. I am 4/7 to draw it, since Ross was 2/7 last turn.
>Ross_Brown: IIILSUU 14N .I +4 334
#note This position was ridiculous for Ross. Not sure what he was attempting here, though.
>Joshua_Sokol: AACERTT M13 TAT +15 345
#note Ross was beside himself about the Q being the last tile in the pool, but actually I have wins with every draw. I just had to see them, and I had less than one minute. It looked like this would probably win, so I jumped on it. I would have played (T)RACTATE 11B if I thought I needed to. M13 TAR is best, since it guarantees me an out next turn. This makes it much closer than it needed to be.
>Ross_Brown: IILQSUU 15I QUIL.S +34 368
>Joshua_Sokol: ACER L12 CAR. +21 366
#note 00:07
>Ross_Brown: IU 2N U. +8 376
>Joshua_Sokol: E 4B .....E +9 375
#note 00:01
>Joshua_Sokol: (I) +2 377
#note I suck, but at least I am clutch and did not choke another one.
